October 2009 Went on the Circle Tour September 29-October 4, 2009. Favorite places were Rossport and Thunder Bay. Vernon Bonneville, Burnsville, Minnesota Summer 2008 Went on the tour around the Lake in the summer of 2008. My favorite places were: Thunder Bay, Ontario, Lutsen, Minnesota, and Wawa, Ontario. Arvin L. Trepkowski, Saginaw, Michigan September 6, 2009 Favorite spots were Keweenaw Peninsula, Fort Wilkens State Park, the whole Canadian North and East side of the lake, the beach and pictographs at Lake Superior Provincial Park, Rainbow Falls and Rainbow Falls Campground, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and Marie Louise Lake campground and one of our favorite Minnesota towns, Grand Marais. Besides the awesome scenery throughout the whole trip, we enjoyed the friendly people we met at all the campsites - Americans and Canadians. Randy & Cathy & Zach Hagen, Duluth, Minnesota August 2009 I left my home in Montpelier, Vermont, on July 9th and arrived home August 2nd, having circumnavigated Lake Superior (well, I mean I drove around the Circle Tour on land). I even took a day to take the ferry to Isle Royale, so I have almost cross-navigated it as well. I did it on my own, camping in my Subaru Forester. There were many highlights to this trip, but one of the best was seeing your offices in Duluth, and having lunch with some famous people there. Having seen the newest issue of the magazine, I see I may have missed some things on my way around, so I expect my husband and I will have to do it again, and then I will complete my third trip around. I will have to decide whether to go counterclockwise or clockwise next time. Karen Jackson, Montpelier, Vermont September 4-11, 2009 After months of planning and anticipation, we completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour in 8 days during September 2009, camping with our two dogs. We’ve been a lot of places, but this definitely tops the list! And as far away from home as we traveled while on our trip, we never felt far from home because we were always near Lake Superior, the same lake we are near every day while at home. We stayed in Sleeping Giant, Neys and Pancake Bay provincial parks in Ontario. Then we stayed at Lake Michigan Campground after a slight detour down to the Mackinac Bridge and the northern shore of Lake Michigan. Next, we stayed at Twelvemile Beach Campground in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and our last night was at Fort Wilkens State Park in Copper Harbor. It’s hard to choose just a few, but here are the highlights of our trip: Our stay at Neys Provincial Park, which is an absolutely beautiful place and was very quiet due to its location away from the large cities; the Pictured Rocks Boat Tour out of Munising, Michigan - an awesome way to see the sandstone formations, since I wasn’t aware at the time where a good spot to put my kayak in would be; Tahquamenon Falls and the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub, which had amazing food; watching the sunsets over Lake Superior -we see the sunrise over the lake from our living room every morning, so it was cool to see a sunset; and pretty much the entire Ontario Parks system - very impressive! Since we have both lived on the north shore in Minnesota our entire lives, we buzzed right through as far as Thunder Bay our first day. We’ve seen everything between Duluth and there and decided to make day trips to revisit them in the near future. The same goes for Wisconsin’s south shore, which we’ve spent a lot of time visiting. I’d say that these two areas still hold the #1 spot in our hearts! It was awesome to be able to camp and kayak all over Lake Superior. We made so many new memories that we’ll cherish forever. We are already planning to return for a few days each to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan and Neys Provincial Park in Ontario next summer! Dan & Erin Carlson, Two Harbors |
