October 2009 Went with my mother (it was what she wanted to do for her 70th birthday). Favorites were lighthouses, waterfalls and just being near the water. Loved Split Rock Lighthouse. Walter & Bettie Jagiello, North Little Rock, Arkansas August 2008 My son, Jack and I completed the tour over two summers: Canadian side in 2008, U.S. side in 2007. Our favorite spot/experience was the swinging bridge over the White River in Pukaskwa National Park (Ontario), Munising, Michigan, for the swimming beach, Minnesota’s north shore for the bicycle trails, Russ Kendall’s smoked fish and the Voyageur Motel in Two Harbors. Steve McCaw, Normal, Illinois I have been around Lake Superior more than once during the past 15 years and it makes absolutely no difference which direction I’ve gone because it is so wonderful. In between times, I just go up for a LONG weekend on either the north or south shore and go west as far as I can in two days and turn around and return. It never ceases to amaze me that the same route looks totally different. I absolutely love Lake Superior - it’s such a powerful lake, just like the ocean. My mother accompanied me on both circle trips, but she is now deceased. Thank you for the membership. I’ll continue to share my love for Lake Superior with all who I meet and encourage them to make this awesome Circle Tour. Carol Brodbeck, Ypsilanti, Michigan September 2010 My husband and I just completed the Circle Tour on September 14th! We took the trip by motorcycle starting on September 5th at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and going counterclockwise. We did a lot of waterfall viewing and some geocaching along the way and found some great places to stay and eat also. Our favorite motel was the Seagull Bay in Bayfield, Wisconsin, and the second favorite was the Thomsonite Beach Resort in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Our favorite restaurant was the Kinniwabi Pines International Cuisine in Wawa, Ontario. Our favorite waterfalls were the Black River Falls in Michigan, the Sand River Falls in Ontario and the Cascade Falls in Wisconsin. Thanks to your magazine for all the helpful articles and tips for a great vacation! P.S. We did a travel blog on travelpod.com as 2up4ever. Our pictures and other favorites can be seen there. We are still updating it. Deborah Bergren, Rockford, Michigan September 2010 I was born in Detroit, Michigan, and spent 18 years there with several camping trips to the Upper Peninsula and Boundary Waters of Minnesota with my father as a kid. I have lived the rest of my life in coastal North Carolina and have had the Lake Superior Circle Tour on my bucket list for several years. I left North Carolina on August 29, 2010, fearing that hurricane Earl may force me to return home, but fortunately it spared us so my trip could continue. I have been retired for 10 years and made this trip alone as my wife still works and saves her vacation for horse shows. While I really enjoyed the entire trip, I would have to say the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was probably my favorite. I entered at Grand Marais, Michigan, and hiked to Au Sable Falls then drove to Hurricane River and hiked the beach to Au Sable Lighthouse. Then a stop at the log slide on Grand Sable Dunes and the spectacular overlook there. The next morning I towed my small 17-foot fiberglass Casita travel trailer to Munising, Michigan, and took the afternoon Pictured Rocks boat tour. I also enjoyed watching the lake freighters at the Soo Locks, Whitefish Bay, Marquette, Duluth and Two Harbors. When I was a boy my dad would take me down to the Detroit River so I could watch the ore boats go up and down the river, and I quickly learned the stack colors of each ship line. The single most photographic stop was Split Rock Lighthouse. One other outstanding events was having a young black bear at my campsite in Bayfield, Wisconsin. I added two other stops, not on the Lake Superior Circle Tour, during my trip. On the way up I stopped and visited Mackinac Island and on the way home Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where a deer ran out in front of my truck causing $3,000 in damage. Unfortunately, the deer was killed but the truck was still drivable and I was able to make it home in good shape. I completed the Circle Tour in three weeks from August 29 to September 19, 2010, and drove it clockwise starting and ending at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The entire trip from North Carolina around the lake and returning was 4,394 miles. Thank you so much for the Lake Superior Travel Guide and the Guide Book, they were very important in planning my trip. Kenneth Court, Jacksonville, North Carolina |
