June 2000 and June 2002 We loved every little town and harbor. Pancake Bay in Canada was wonderful, and a relaxing spot. Really were impressed with the Soo Locks, watching the big boats and wandering around the town. Whitefish Point was truly a highlight, along with all the other lighthouses, as I am a collector of lighthouses. Very interesting at the Shipwreck Museum. Stayed in Munising and did the glass bottom shipwreck tour. What terrific sights we saw! Stayed a couple of days at Copper Harbor. We camped both trips and that alone is incredible. The beaches, the forests and, of course, the ever-present lake. Always changing, but always the same. It was interesting to see other perspectives. We realized it’s not just “our lake“ but owned by many. We were never disappointed in the scenery. We have flown lots of places in the world, but we had the most fun with our little tent, fires by night and the lake by day. Mike and Mary Gaidis, Duluth, Minnesota May 25, 2003 Upper Magpie Falls in Wawa - biggest waterfalls, most amazing thing I’ve ever seen! Whitefish Point was really great, too. If I had it to do over again, I’d spend more time in the U.P. - so much more to see than I expected. Michael Kilmer, Verona, Wisconsin August 1998 We have been to many parts of Lake Superior over many years, but in July and August of 1998 we decided to do the whole circle tour for our honeymoon - it couldn’t have been more perfect. One of our favorite spots was stumbling upon The Rossport Inn. We were so enchanted with the Inn, the owners and the fabulous food we decided to stay on a few more days. We’ve returned there twice since and hope to be back this summer. We’ve loved so many places along the lake - each has its own magic and every visit still takes our breath away. Lee & Susan Newman, Marthasville, Missouri Three times! Once in 1972, then in 1974 and most recently in 1988 In 1972 I was in middle school and went with an adventurous aunt, Irene Bush, and two cousins, Jane and Tony Kielcheski. It was my first BIG trip away from home - boy, what an adventure! We stayed at Sibley Provincial (now Sleeping Giant) park outside Thunder Bay, Lake Superior Provincial Park near Wawa. The most memorable thing about the trip was going over the Mackinac bridge - WOW! The second time, in 1974, was the first time my family had all camped together - an adventure in itself! The last time was in 1988. The most memorable part was the Algoma Central Railway Canyon Train … I am a BIG rail fan! Erin McCarthy, Merrill, Wisconsin 1984 I completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour in 1984 and will be going again this summer. Highlights were camping at Pancake Bay, moose crossing in front of the car and the many bird species seen in travel. Nancy Halloran, Cedarburg, Wisconsin 2002 Favorite Spot: Tettegouche State Park. Anurag Mehta, Madison, Wisconsin 2002 Sakshi Mehta, Atlanta, Georgia 2003 Shub & Inder Mehta, New Delhi, India 1993, via bicycle I circled Lake Superior on a mountain bike by myself. I started from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and completed the trip in 16 days. I very much enjoyed my experience and would highly recommend such a trip for others. I would say that my most memorable experience was watching the white clouds speed overhead on a particularly difficult riding day, somewhere between Nipigon and Schreiber, where I stopped for a rest. I remember looking over the lake where I marveled at the beauty of the sky and the deep, rich blue color of the water. A rare jewel in my life was that day, where amid apparent turmoil and struggle, I was able to find a brilliant satisfaction. Lance Bagge, West St. Paul, Minnesota May 26, 2003 We had two favorites - mine was the shipwreck museum and Janet loved beach combing. John Shuster & Janet Davis, Virginia, Minnesota May 28, 2003 My favorite spot was Lake of the Clouds in Porcupine Mountains of Michigan. The road in the state park was awesome. We also enjoyed the wonderful Route 17 in Canada. It was very picturesque and we were able to have lunch with friends in Thunder Bay. A great trip! *Note: (we feel) the gravel on the road in the Porcupine State Park is unsafe. Donna & Steve Pronto, Crystal Lake, Illinois June 17, 2003 We did it this past four days on our Harley and loved it! Old Woman Bay was my favorite of all . . . What a view! We would love to get the sticker for our bike. Cheryl Mosner, Cottage Grove, Minnesota June 28-July 5, 2003 Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, Wisconsin - We spent the 4th of July night there in a lovely suite. It was so wonderful to look outside through our windows and there was Lake Superior. We also went on the maiden voyage of the Ashland Bay Express (I think that was the name). It was a beautiful evening for a narrated cruise around the Ashland Harbor. I highly recommend it. A good place to eat is the Deep Water Grille in Ashland. Try the Walleye soup - the fish is great, too. I also recommend allowing yourself more time to make the Circle Tour than we did. I know we missed so much. Remember that July 1 is Canada Day and of course, July 4th, many stores and attractions are closed. Diane & Sheldon Robinson, Hutchinson, Minnesota July 17, 2003 We have just completed our circle tour of Lake Superior. What a great trip! Our tour was in conjunction with the Wolf’s Head Rally. The most scenic and well-liked part of the trip was between Wawa and Nipigon. The scenery was awesome! We had fog between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa, so didn’t see as much. Eric Johnson and Jerry Garvey completed the trip with me. Ted Zoccoli, Mendota Heights, Minnesota July 13, 2003 We experienced the Lake Superior Circle Tour, leaving from West Chicago, Illinois, on Thursday, July 3, 2003, and arriving home on Sunday, July 13, 2003. We experienced different weather - from rain to coolness to sunny skies. We decided to take our time on motorcycles so the weather was not as serious a factor. Greg’s favorite part was going through the Porcupine Mts. It was absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. We were able to see Lake Superior quite a bit while we were riding and even when we were going from Marathon to Wawa there were beautiful little lakes to see. The North Shore was fun and we went to Betty’s Pies. From then on, pie became an integral part of our trip - we had to have it everywhere we went. We also had poutine, which we loved. Needless to say, we didn’t come back any thinner! Greg & Lori Rosiejka, West Chicago, Illinois August 11-18, 2003 We were in the Canadian Sault St. Marie during the big blackout. It was fun to find ways to amuse ourselves without electricity. Our favorite spot was the Sand Beach Park in Michigan. Renee & Ross Milberger, Cloquet, Minnesota July 2003 After circling the lake on snowmobiles and being thoroughly impressed I vowed to return and see the lake in a different season. This summer my sons and I were able to return and circle the lake on motorcycles. We left Duluth On Wednesday, July 9th, and and traveled to Ontonagon, Michigan, Copper Harbor and Munising. Then to Wawa via the Soo and Batchawana Bay. On through White River, Marathon and Nipigon before resting at Thunder Bay and cruising down Highway 61 to Duluth where we parted. We each had our favorite spot … Brian was quite taken with the U.P./Copper Harbor area and shows great interest in returning with his family. Brad thought the Marathon and Terrace Bay stretch was awe-inspiring while I was very impressed with the beauty and friendliness of the Wawa area.
