July 29, 2009 We completed the Circle Tour on July 29. Our favorite spot and experience was a picnic lunch on a rock overlooking the lake in the Knife River area. We had smoked lake trout from Russ Kendall’s Smoked Meats. Other favorites were the lighting of the light at Split Rock Lighthouse and shopping at Joynes Ben Franklin Store in Grand Marais. We would definitely do the Minnesota part of the trip again. Lionel & Debbie Bridges, Fair Grove, Missouri June 30, 2009 Date Tour Completed: June 30, 2009 (the first half of the circle tour was completed in the summer of 2006 and we completed the 2nd half this summer). Favorite spots/experiences: When attempting to name our favorite memory of the Circle Tour and the Lake Superior region, this becomes a close call and could have gone either way. Sleeping Giant Provincial Park was a wonderful camping experience, with its diverse hiking trails and wilderness landscape. We also saw more wildlife in this park, including several black bear, innumerable deer, fox and other residents of the park, than in any other location on our trip. However, the first place prize for us was visiting the Soo on Engineers Day. The festivities, the people, the volunteers hosting the events, the ability to walk the grounds of the locks and, finally, the boat tour through the locks conducted by the Soo Locks Boat Tour folks made for the most exciting day of our trip. To be sure, there were other sites that were equally enjoyable (who can visit Grand Marais, Minnesota, and not come away impressed), but these two experiences were tops for us. Mary & Phil Hunter, Bangor, Maine July 26, 2009 Sunday, July 26, my wife and I completed the Circle Tour. Starting on Sunday, July 12th from South Bay Mouth, Manitoulin Island, to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The next day to Wawa. The 14th from Wawa to Thunder Bay. On route we saw a cow moose on Highway 17 and an hour before Thunder Bay I almost hit a mother bear with a cub. While in Thunder Bay we visited my daughter and went to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. More of Mother Nature’s creatures - wolf and lots of deer. On Sunday the 19th, we left Thunder Bay and crossed at Grand Portage and visited Grand Marais, where the donuts were out of this world, all the way to Duluth. Lovely harbour at this city, with many places to sit and enjoy the water. Saw lake freighters going under the bridge which was raised for them. From there to Ashland, Ironwood to Ishpeming. Lovely area with lots of great people. On from there the next day to St. Ignace. Stayed four days, had a great hotel, overlooking Lake Huron and Mackinac Island. Visited there twice and went to the Soo in the US. We went home via Port Huron. Klaus Grotke, Hamilton, Ontario July 2009 My wife and I completed the circle tour on our motorcycles. We left Duluth on Sunday July 12, and headed West. We took our time and completed the tour on Wednesday, July 22. We loved the views in Ontario, the food at the Continental in White River, not to mention Grand Marais, Minnesota. Eagle River, Michigan, along the whole Keweenaw Peninsula was beautiful! Brent & Lori Henry, Austin, Minnesota August 4, 2009 This was my first time around the northern rim of the lake which was fun enough, but add that I did it on my motorcycle was just a time I will remember forever. The mountains to the shoreline and back up again. The roads were smooth and well maintained. Each bend from Duluth to the tip of the lake was something incredible to see, even a Minnesotan and Canadian moose. I appreciated how close Minnesota Highway 61 was kept in proximity to the water. Great job Minnesota! Michigan could learn a few things from you. My favorite new city along the path was Grand Marais, Minnesota. I had dinner at the Angry Trout Café and it was by far one of the best seafood dinners I have experienced in the USA (grilled herring with wild cranberries, tarragon and dill). By far, though, the RIDE was the special event. Something to see at every moment. A new vista with each wind of the road. The bends in the road are constant. Set the lean angle and release in another 2 minutes when the road straightens out again. Lake Superior Provincial Park was also a delight. Such a play on elevation, steep grades, cloud, sun, shimmering water and a feeling of flying over it all. Next time, a helmet cam is a must to capture what has registered in my thoughts along the way. Robert Komjathy, Brighton, Michigan August 2009 We’ve visited the Upper Peninsula at various times visiting the Keweenaw several times, and my daughter went to college for 2 years in Marquette at Northern Michigan University. We also spent a vacation at Pictured Rocks and visited Tahquamenon Falls on a trip around Lake Michigan, so this year’s trip started in Iron Mountain and went west through Duluth and up around the top of the lake, finishing with another visit to Tahquamenon. We spent 2-1/2 weeks and took our time doing drives of under 150 miles, so we could stop frequently and hike a lot. We traveled with a pop-up trailer and our Honda Element. It would be hard to cite our favorites though most of them are in the U.S. We enjoyed the wild remoteness of Canada, but most of the towns did not live up to their glossy brochures. It was hard to find a place to eat, so we mostly picnicked or cooked in camp. Gas was also very expensive in Canada, more than $1/liter or more than $4/gallon, when it was between $2.50 and $2.60 at home. We loved stopping at waterfalls and state parks in Minnesota and spent 3 nights in Grand Marais and a full day hiking at Cascade. We also spent 3 nights in Thunder Bay. Highlights in Canada for me were Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay, where we spent an entire day, Ouimet Canyon and a small amethyst mine near Pearl.
