Our favorite part of the trip was the scenery between Nipigon and Sault Ste. Marie. Completed the tour in 7 days between September 7 and September 14, 2007.

Tom & I just completed our circle tour of Lake Superior. We left home, Andover, Minnesota, on October 11, 2007, and drove to Thunder Bay the first day. We saw a timber wolf cross the road in front of us coming into Grand Portage. We saw many deer on the side of the road near Duluth. We stayed in Thunder Bay the first night. The weather was beautiful for most of our trip. We kept looking for moose along the way, but the only one we saw was one that had been shot by a hunter and was hanging upside down in a deer camp by Nipigon. We had snow near Nipigon also. We stayed at Wawa, Ontario, the second day. Saw many beautiful waterfalls there. On to Sault Ste. Marie. The trees were beautiful most of the time, some were void of leaves, but there were pockets of color and they were amazing. The people were very friendly in Wawa. We stayed in Marquette on the third night. We enjoyed the trip to Copper Harbor. The wildlife viewing was fantastic. We even saw a ruffled grouse doing her little dance on the road in front of us. We had to stop to avoid hitting her. Bayfield was our fourth night destination. We have been to Bayfield many times, but it is always spectacular! The Seagull Bay Resort was wonderful. Nice trip. We enjoyed it very much!

We completed the circle tour on Friday October 12 one week after we started. Our favorite spots were Grand Marais, Sleeping Giant, Pictured Rocks and Lake Superior Provincial Park. Counterclockwise is the best. Thunder Bay was the friendliest. Two weeks is the optimum length and we would visit Lake Superior Provincial Park again for a week. The weather was the most surprising thing we encountered. Grand Portage Scenic outlook on the Minnesota/Ontario border.

Our “Superior 8” started with a rather gloomy, wet, uneventful drive north, by way of Sudbury en route to Sault Saint Marie. I loved how all the signs in and around, whether for directions or for businesses, spelled it "Soo"; so as not to confuse the out-of-towners? Or perhaps the locals? "What in God's name is Sault?!" At any rate, we stayed the night, and by morning we were crossing into Michigan, with advice from a local tourist booth that Munising would be a nice place to drop our canoe for a little spin. The town really didn't make up for the fairly sparse drive through that part of the otherwise lovely state of Michigan; luckily for us, I had discovered early in our travels that our Buick Allure, which we rented (and should be pointed out, made extraordinary gas mileage), had XM satellite radio … it was love from the start. We pushed on to Houghton but stopped to buy the one item we had indeed forgotten - shampoo. We were fortunate that the shower in our hotel in "Soo" had in fact a dispenser, but we decided to buy some in case our other showers didn't provide us that particular luxury. Houghton is the jewel of Michigan by my reckoning: home to Michigan Tech and some of the most gorgeous girls I'd seen … moving on. My father found a quaint restaurant/pub called 'The Library' which provided a lovely showing of the aforementioned women … the food was good also. We stayed the night, and at approximately 7:15 a.m. I awoke to what initially sounded as if someone was stomping their feet around in a circle, directly above my bed. I promptly called the front desk to complain that "someone was banging around like a madman upstairs." They apologized and promised to help remedy the situation. The banging ceased and I got up to have breakfast which came with our room; not included was the orange juice that I ordered. When checking out, I had an outstanding bill of $3, which the manager promptly comped, as the banging above our room was due to the kitchen staff preparing a large banquet meal for that evening. Perhaps from my abrupt awakening, I had forgotten to pack the shampoo - $3 - the universe had realigned itself. We drove on into Wisconsin on the way to Minnesota. It was only when we reached somewhere south of Grand Marais (which was the second most picturesque town we drove through) that my father and I first learned of the Superior Circle Tour Club from a pamphlet my father picked up. So here I am, three weeks since, recounting our trip and all that we saw and did: it was a magnificent trip. But allow me to continue … We stopped at a restaurant in a small town just outside of Duluth called the 'Castle View Inn'(Lakeview Castle) and though the view was indeed beautiful, the food decent, it was quite a strange sort of place. No more than three people could be seen working there, never in the same room, and perhaps a total of 5 patrons within the time there, including ourselves. We had been seated in the dining area which was built to resemble a Castle in some sort of way, and could clearly accommodate a very large number of customers … very odd. Onwards on … We drove straight on to Thunder Bay, which was our primary destination, as it was my father's first home as a Czechoslovak immigrant coming to Canada in 1968. It had been decades since last he visited and we met some lovely elderly friends whom he knew then. We stayed there a day and two nights in fact, wanting to visit an old Slovak church that Sunday morning. Afterwards we left with no particular destination, but rather stumbled upon what would be the second highlight of the trip, and the most beautiful picturesque town of Rossport. Nestled quietly and out of almost plain sight, we stopped for a splendid lunch in a very quaint little restaurant, afterwards to drop our canoe in one of the smallest marinas I'd ever seen. In truth, once on the water and paddling, I did not want to leave. But after spending a couple of hours there, in the end, we decided to move on. With the day rapidly diminishing, we almost regretted not finding lodging in Rossport, only to find ourselves witness to the most beautiful sunset I'll probably ever see … it is forever in my dreams. We were just south of Wawa, having almost run out of gas, the sun just starting to set and ahead, as we descended a large hill, was Lake Superior; colors cast upon the water I didn't know existed, with the full moon clearly in my rear view mirror. It was, in a word, breathtaking. The two of us then ended our circle tour where we started - back in the 'Soo.’ Our total trip spanned just over 2,100km/1,300miles … Soo to Soo. We returned home by way of rounding the southern part of Lake Huron, hence our Superior 8. And thanks to the comedy channels on XM, we laughed all the way home.
