July 1971 Our trip around Lake Superior was in July of 1971. Our truck and camper looked very much like the one in your picture - an International wagon with a tiny blue camper. We had each other, our two children and the cat and away we went. It was a great time and vacation. Our favorite spot was Batchawana Bay, Ontario. Bill & Phyllis Beverlin, Gilbertsville, Kentucky Fall 2004 and June 2006 In the fall of 2004, with the exception of the Keweenaw Peninsula, we drove the southern side of Lake Superior from Ashland, Wisconsin, up to Bayfield, Wisconsin, over to Madeline Island and then on to Duluth and Grand Marais, Minnesota, which, incidentally, may be our favorite spot. We were fascinated one afternoon watching the fog from the lake as it advanced and receded several times. Moving on into Ontario on Highway 17. Were pleased to see the recognition of how Winnie-the-Pooh came to be from the White River area. Then on down to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and the U.S. locks. Oh yes, the Grand Portage Fort was historically interesting as well. Don & Carol Denniston, Santa Clara, California August 2006 My husband, Bob, and I recently completed our third Circle Tour of Lake Superior. First by road in the early ’70s, by sailboat in the late 90s and again by car in August 2006. We began and ended the clockwise trip in Ashland, Wisconsin, taking six days. There is a highway pullout north of Rossport where the views are absolutely breathtaking and a great photo stop. We have always enjoyed the rugged beauty of Ontario and the warmth and friendliness of our Canadian neighbors. The suspension bridges and hike around the lake in Ouimet Canyon were well worthwhile. Also, a good place to buy amethyst souvenirs. Our favorite destination - and one we’ve stayed at several times over the years - is the Salzburger Hof. This family run motel and restaurant on Batchawana Bay is worth the trip just to have dinner there. Delicious! It would also be a good spot to spend a few days while exploring Agawa Canyon, Pancake Bay Provincial Park and not-to-be-missed Lake Superior Provincial Park. Tell Ann we sent you! And, of course, watching a laker through the Soo is awesome and do plan to take the narrated cruise. Marilyn Akers, Punta Gorda, Florida September 5, 2006 Favorite spots: Wawa to the Soo; Copper Harbor, Michigan; north shore of Minnesota. Best experience: traveling by motorcycle and camping along the way. Karisa L. Coad, St. Paul, Minnesota August 2006 My family and I took the trip around Lake Superior in August. We had a great time. The whole tour was very fun. One of our favorite places to stay was the Rossport Inn. The trains coming by at night added to the magic of the trip. My family is Mark, Annette, George, Jane, Maggie and Sandy Sereika. We all loved the trip. Mark Sereika, Evanston, Illinois September 2006 My wife, Cathy, and I just competed the Circle Tour. We left home September 9. We were riding a 2002 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic. We crossed the ferry to Manitoulin and stayed in Little Current that evening. Sunday to Wawa, Monday to Thunder Bay, Tuesday to Two Harbors, Wednesday to Houghton, Thursday to Mackinaw City, home again Friday evening, September 15 at 6 p.m. via Port Huron/Sarnia. We went a total of 3,476 kilometers. The weather was fantastic, bright sunny days every day (very important when you are riding a motorcycle). We elected to stay in motels rather than camp and averaged $50 per night for good, clean rooms. All of our restaurant experiences were good. We ate well and didn’t spend a lot of money. We tend to go to “Mom and Pop” businesses as we seem to get good value and service. They always tend to be interesting, helpful people who want your business. I enjoyed Two Harbors because of the harbor, ships and locomotives. We both enjoyed Bayfield, Wisconsin. We had a great fish dinner at Morty’s Tavern. Our favorite place was Copper Harbor. The view from Brockway Mountain Drive was rivaled only by some of the views of Lake Superior between Marathon and Thunder Bay. The Terry Fox Memorial is very emotional. It is hard to describe the feelings I had viewing it. Seven days is okay, but the longer you take, the better, as there is much to see and do. WE WILL BE BACK! Bernard McCormick, Woodham, Ontario September 2006 We completed our Circle Tour on September 16 at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, after having started on September 7 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The high point was the FABULOUS IRMA conference in Duluth, but we also especially enjoyed Old Fort William and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. What a wonderful part of the world!
