June 2006
We made the Lake Superior Circle Tour in our
motorhome the last week of June 2006. We only had six days, which we
found really wasn’t long enough to see everything we wanted to see. We
want to return to the Michigan/Wisconsin side, especially Bayfield. We
were mainly interested in lighthouses and falls. We would like to take
the lighthouse tour from Bayfield. We enjoyed the wildlife. We saw many
deer. A skunk with three babies (they were really cute) and two bear.
Would have loved to see a moose, but no such luck. We found the guide
provide by the Lake Superior Magazine to be very helpful. We
were able to read what there was to do and see in each town and make
the decision if we wanted to stop or not. It also helped us locate camp
sites. Thanks!

We travelled from Windsor, Ontario to Thunder Bay
to see relatives and we had a wonderful time doing the Circle Tour. Our
favorite stop was the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. We camped in
Hancock and really enjoyed looking at the architecture in that area
from the time of the copper mines. If we are able to take another trip
up to Superior, we would to go on the Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tour
& Toonerville Trolley Wilderness Train Ride at Soo Junction, and we
would like to go to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish
Point. They looked interesting, but we didn’t know about them and
didn’t plan for the time to go see them.

We just returned this afternoon from completing the
Circle Tour of Lake Superior. It was me and my husband and Roy and
Cindi. Gary and I clocked 1,700 miles, Roy and Cindi about 100 more,
since they live farther away. We all rode our own bikes, leaving Friday
August 11 after work, staying in Hinckley, Minnesota, Grand Marais,
Minnesota, Schreiber, Ontario, Wawa, Ontario, Paradise, Michigan,
Marquette, Michigan, Houghton, Michigan, and Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Rotten weather (rain) from Grand Marais until Schreiber, beautiful
after that. Best hotel was the Mystic Isle in Wawa, worst was Circle
Route in Schreiber. It would have been nice to have more turn-offs in
Canada, I think we only counted four Scenic Lookouts on the entire
Canadian side! Border crossings were a breeze with passports and
nothing to hide. Best night was in Curly’s in Paradise - rooms were
okay, but we were lakeside and the view was spectacular! We had a fire
by the lake, a few drinks and watched the sunset. Our last night was at
Island View Bed & Breakfast in Bayfield - by far the very best room
(a suite actually) and view to die for! We were just too tired to do it
justice!

We left Sault Ste. Marie last Monday and traveled
east. We stayed in Marquette, Two Harbors, Marathon and back to the Soo
on Thursday about 5 p.m. The best part of the trip was the ride from
Two Harbors to the Canadian border. The many waterfalls in Canada
(especially Rainbow Falls) were awesome as well.

We used the map you provided to make our loop
around Lake Superior, and had a great time. Eric, Mary, Sarah and Jagr
left on July 5th and returned on the 11th. Our favorite spots were:
Thunder Bay, the Sleeping Giant campground. That place was gorgeous and
had so many activities for all of us. The rangers were great! They
stopped by our fire in the evening and gave us some terrific ideas for
hikes with our kids. As a result, we were the only people on a huge
sandy beach covered with all kinds of animal paw prints for
investigating. Old Woman Beach was awesome too, we saw a moose at the
water’s edge. Back on the America side, we enjoyed Sault Ste. Marie
very much. It was a great trip, full of family memories!

My husband, Tom, and I just finished the Lake
Superior Circle Tour last Friday with Brian and Mary Sandvig. Had a
great time! Loved the blue/green colors of the Lake. We both really
enjoyed our stay at Northern Best Motel, just outside Wawa, Ontario.
Had a delightful, clean motel room overlooking a lovely river valley.
There’s a great restaurant very close by this motel (not affiliated
with the motel) that served a wonderful, gourmet fare that was
mouthwatering! We enjoyed the outdoor hot tub to unwind those tight
muscles from cycle riding. I also really enjoyed going up to Copper
Harbor and Brockway Mountain, Michigan. Was a spectacular view and we
had lovely weather. The only bad day was Sunday, when we left under
heavy cloud cover from Duluth area and drove into rain in Two Harbors
and all the way to Red Rock, Ontario. Otherwise, weather was great. We
found so many merchants and restaurant people along the lake tour to be
friendly and fun. We had the server in Sault Ste. Marie laughing out
loud with a funny story about my husband, and she was great fun. Even
served us a complimentary slice of pie after she heard it was our 19th
anniversary on August 15. Disappointed not to see any moose, but then
again, we didn’t want to have one run into our cycles on the road
either. All in all, a great trip.
