June 2006
Traveled from June 18-24, 2006, with 71-year-old father. Favorite spot was Minnesota’s north shore. Counterclockwise was great.

We left our home on August 25, 2006, and drove to
Bayfield, Wisconsin, that day to begin our tour. We returned home on
September 4. So, we completed the trip in 10 days. Since we’ve been to
the U.P. of Michigan several other times, we skipped the travel between
Munising, Michigan, and Bayfield, Wisconsin, on this trip, but we’ve
certainly covered all of this area many times on previous trips. In
fact, we love the U.P. so much that we purchased vacant land there. The
trip was awesome! It was beautiful all the way around! I would do it
again in a heartbeat. Of the 10 days we had, we camped eight of them at
state parks and Canadian provincial parks, all amazing places. The
weather was on our side during the entire trip, we had all sun and no
rain whatsoever! We have sooooo many favorites. Some of them are the
many waterfalls and lighthouses, the amethyst mine (we saw a black bear
cross the road here), the suspension bridge over Ouimet Canyon, Fort
William (my daughter loved it), Sleeping Giant, Beardmore ( you know
you made it this far north when you see the big snowman with a fishing
pole), Neys Provincial Park (a hidden gem), Pukaskwa National Park,
Agawa Rock Pictographs, all the beautiful bays and coves along the lake
with white sand beaches, Pancake Bay (we went swimming here),
Tahquamenon Falls area (my sister and I saw a moose and baby cross the
road a few years ago here), Whitefish Point (we watched the sunrise on
this point), the Kitch-iti-kippi Big Spring, Pictured Rocks, Keweenaw
Peninsula (the ice sculptures at Michigan Tech here are awesome to see
in the winter). My daughter learned so much about the Indian culture,
and she will never forget some of the lovely people we met and all the
beautiful sights we encountered on this trip. We loved it all!

Jim and Karen Carnes completed the Circle Tour of
Lake Superior on September 22, 2006. We started at Sault Ste. Marie on
September 14. The scenery was awesome. We drove the Canadian side first
and enjoyed the Agawa Rocks, Ouimet Canyon and Kakabeka Falls. On the
U.S. side, our favorites were the Minnesota coast, Duluth Harbor,
Tahquamenon Falls and watching the freighters at the Soo. We hope to do
it again in a couple years.

Drove 2,124 miles from the Twin Cities, Minnesota,
clockwise around Lake Superior. Camped by the lake along the way.
Weather was excellent and warm in Canada, a little rainy and colder
when we dropped back into the states at the Michigan U.P. Took a detour
to see the Mackinaw Bridge. Best experiences: Camped on the beach at
site #23 in Rainbow Falls Provincial Park with magnificent sunsets.
Viewed a rugged canyon/fault formation that was quite interesting near
Terrance, Ontario. Soo locks in Sault Ste. Marie. Didn’t realize that
most Canadian shops start closing after the Labor Day weekend and many
Canadian Campgrounds close after September 10. Looked all over for a
bumper sticker with the green Lake Superior Circle Tour logo on it.
Finally found one near the end of our trip in Munising, Michigan.

Met friends in Nipigon. “Rocky” Wawa and Kakabeka
Falls were favorite spots. Wife enjoyed the trip but said, “The next
time I see a tree, it better be a PALM TREE.” Her choice next year.

We completed our tour August 18-25, leaving from
the Twin Cities. We traveled by minivan, camped in a tent and ate out
the whole way. Growing up in Minnesota, I always had the north shore,
with Gooseberry Falls as my favorite place to explore and climb rocks.
Now I have many new favorite places, especially the Ontario Provincial
Parks. Our gem was Rossport campground, where we camped right on the
lake and watched the Northern Lights from the rocky shore. Chalie, our
eight year old, found heaven in Katherine Cove in Lake Superior
Provincial Park. He played in the surf for hours. We thought we were in
Hawaii! Enrique loved Kakabeka Falls. Lisa loved every mile, every
minute of the trip, but her favorite thing was the Lake Superior Travel Guide, the
only item you should not leave home without - the best $8.95 I’ve ever
spent! Thank you for everything, I recommend this trip to everyone I
meet!
