October 2006
I just completed my Lake Superior Circle Tour which went
from September 8 through October 2, 2006. Lake Superior is always
beautiful. Every year I spend a week in the fall on the north shore of
Minnesota, which is my favorite place in the world. However, over and
above that, I thought the drive and sights between Sault Ste. Marie and
Wawa, Ontario, were absolutely fabulous, especially with the vivid red
colors of fall highlighting the hills.

September 2006
We just returned from doing the Circle Tour - were
gone September 4-15, 2006. Could have used more time but we managed to
take in some spectacular sites. Our favorite camping spots were at
Rainbow Falls, Rossport and Lake Superior Provincial Park, Agawa Bay.
We spent a lot of time on the “coastal” trails, which involved climbing
over huge rocks more than hiking. We were fascinated with the custom of
building cairns which are everywhere - roadsides and beaches - and we
added a few of our own. For a tasty treat we recommend stopping a the
St. John’s Monastery Bakery which is called the Jampot. It is located
near Eagle River in Michigan’s U.P. Also enjoyed the Porcupine Mountain
Wilderness State Park in Michigan.

August 2006
The four of us on two motorcycles took off from the
Twin Cities on Saturday morning August 12 and arrived in Duluth,
Minnesota, to enjoy the annual Bayfront Blues Festival. The weather and
concert were wonderful on the shores of Lake Superior. We stayed in
Duluth the first night. Sunday was our “rain day.” It rained and was
foggy nearly all the way from Two Harbors, Minnesota, to Red Rock,
Ontario. Before crossing the border we stopped in Grand Portage at
Ryden’s and exchanged U.S. currency for Canadian currency. The bikes
and rain gear held up and we got to the Red Rock Inn at about 7 p.m.
and were able to have dinner there at the Inn. The food was very good,
the rooms were okay (not great). The next morning was sunny and we were
pleasantly surprised by the beautiful setting around us with the rock
bluffs and Nipigon Bay close by. We took off and had breakfast at a
small roadside cafe outside of Nipigon and then headed for Wawa,
Ontario. The sights along Highway 17 of Lake Superior and it’s shores
were spectacular! With the clear skies, Lake Superior was nearly a
Caribbean Aqua Blue in color … it was beautiful. We pulled into Wawa
and headed to Northern Best Motel and found this place to be very
comfortable and clean. They even had bags of rags in each room to clean
your motorcycle! Great customer service. The Kinniwabi Pines Restaurant
was a great place to eat (food and location are the best). If it’s nice
out, sit on their deck overlooking a river valley below. Short day on
Tuesday (150 miles) to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, after crossing the
border back into the USA. We stayed right across from the locks at the
Lockview Motel and Cottages. We stayed in a cottage and found it nice
and spacious. They also provided rags to clean the bikes on request.
Visited with my father and did some tourist things; watched a couple of
ships arrive and depart. The motel is right in the heart of downtown
shopping. The “deluxe” continental breakfast was very good the next
morning! On Wednesday, we made a stop at Negaunee, Michigan, to visit
my brother and his family and then headed to Baraga, Michigan, and
stayed at the Ojibwa Casino there. The rooms and pool area were
comfortable, but we didn’t walk away big winners from the casino. On
Thursday, we headed north to Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain. What
beautiful places these are and such a nice drive through
Houghton/Hancock. Headed southeast and stayed Thursday in Odanah,
Wisconsin, at the Bad River Casino and found the rooms and pool very
comfortable and clean. I walked away with some extra money in my
pockets! Headed back home on Friday and stopped in Bayfield, Wisconsin,
and had breakfast and walked around there for awhile and found it very
beautiful. Made it back to the Twin Cities in the late afternoon and
decided we will do this again someday.
