August-September 2005
We circled the lake last August-September for
our 36th wedding anniversary. We only took six days because we realized
in reading the materials you provided that we could only hit the
highlights and plan more extensive “side trips” as we do the circle
again and again.

We finally took the circle tour in our RV - found an older issue of Lake Superior Magazine most helpful in many ways.

August 2005
I took the circle tour last August 2005 on my motorcycle.
This first day was in the 80s and low 90s across the upper Michigan and
Wisconsin. From Duluth to Thunder bay was in the 50s the next day. From
Thunder Bay to the Sault it rained. I remember being very hot one day,
very cold the next and very wet the third day. It must not have been
too bad an experience as I’m doing it again with four friends. The best
part of the Circle Tour was the stretch from Eagle River to Copper
Harbor, Michigan. Exceptionally spectacular!

We started the circle tour on July 9th and completed it on
July 23rd, leaving from Ottawa, Ontario, up the Ottawa Valley, across
to the Sault, Ontario, via North Bay and Sudbury. Then to Thunder Bay
where we have a cottage or “camp” in the vicinity on the Big Lake,
where we stayed over a week. One of our favorite spots is Pukaskwa
National Park just east and south of Marathon. You can hike inland and
emerge at spectacular beaches strewn with driftwood. On the U.S. side,
we came back via Duluth, Minnesota, through Wisconsin and Marquette,
Michigan, then to the Soo, then headed home. We always enjoy the drive
on the north shore of Minnesota and like to spend a day in Duluth,
where there is a lot to do for young and old alike … mom and dad and
our two kids, ages 9 and 13.

With our good friends, D & K, we took our Goldwings
counter-clockwise around Lake Superior. We enjoyed every part of our
trip from the waterfalls and lighthouses in the U.P. of Michigan, to
the breath-taking lakeside views and overlooks of Ontario. My wife and
I enjoy Old Woman Bay the best. We stopped for an hour to rest, laying
on the beach, soaking up some sun and gazing at the God-created beauty
surrounding the bay. The sand, the water and the uninhabited hills of
trees surrounding the bay made for a picturesque view and backdrop for
many pictures. The scenery on the north side of the lake is stunning
with surreal natural vistas and miles of rocky and sandy shorelines.
Any time of day and from any vantage point we viewed Lake Superior we
were in awe. Temperatures around the lake ranged from 49 degrees to
more than 90 degrees during our nine days of travel. However, no matter
the weather or road conditions, making this trip with motorcycles with
close friends made our trip even more pleasurable. We look forward to
Circle Tour II.

We started the circle tour on July 28 and finished on
August 5, 2006. Three couples completed the tour. Our first night we
spent in Hinckley, Minnesota. Second night we went to Grand Marais,
Minnesota. Third night we stayed in a campground by Terrace Bay,
Ontario. Fourth night we camped at Pancake Bay (very beautiful). Fifth
night we stayed in Munising, Michigan (did the Pictured Rock tour).
Sixth night we spent at Copper Harbor (probably our favorite spot of
the whole trip). And our last night was in Bayfield, Wisconsin. We had
a very good trip except for one morning of fog and rain, it was
fantastic.

Four of us started out on motorcycles in Hastings,
Minnesota, up the St. Croix to Superior, Wisconsin, then over to Duluth
and around clockwise. So many things were beautiful: Gooseberry Falls,
Split Rock Lighthouse, Devils Kettle, Eagle Falls Suspension Bridge,
Painted Rocks National Park.We started on July 10 and finished on July
17, 2006. I think our favorite was the Pictured Rocks. This was an
adventure, staying in the Mom-and-Pop hotels/motels along the way. The
weather was cooperative for the trip, only one morning of rain. It was
a trip to remember for Dad and Son. Riding. The trip was about the lake
and the relationship between Dad and Son and motorcycle.
