August-September 2005
We circled the lake last Aug-Sep. for
our 36th wedding anniversary. We only took six days because we realized
in reading the materials you provided that we could only hit the
highlights and plan more extensive “side trips” as we do the circle
again and again.

Autumn 2005
On the first day of Autumn 2005, a friend and I
left Mankato, Minnesota, for a four-day motorcycle tour around Lake
Superior. It was an incredible trip with warm, sunny days in the 50s
and 60s and nights in the upper 30s. We went clockwise around the lake,
starting at Duluth and made it to Iron River, Michigan, before turning
south toward home. My wife and I have vacationed at the Porcupine
Mountains of Michigan, and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore the
past two years, and I have driven the route from Rhinelander,
Wisconsin, to Grand Rapids, Minnesota - so this trip officially
completed my tour. Highlights from this trip, and others on the North
Shore of Minnesota include; lunch at Grandma’s in Canal Park in Duluth,
Split Rock Lighthouse (get down to the campground and view it from the
lake), camping, bicycling and hiking at Gooseberry Falls and
Tettegouche State Parks, spending a lazy, sunny summer afternoon at the
beautiful beach in Grand Marais, Minnesota, Pictured Rocks National
Lakeshore (again, get out and see it from the lake if you can), and
camping and hiking in the Porcupine Mountains in extreme Western Upper
Michigan. For you motorcyclists, the entire north shore is incredible
riding. As you can see from the maps, nearly the entire route hugs the
shoreline of the lake - making for great stretches of hills and tight
corners and long sweeps and a million places to stop and take in the
beauty of the lake. For me, the absolute best riding country is the
stretch of Trans Canada Highway 17 between Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie,
particularly as it winds through Lake Superior Provincial Park. A note
of caution, though - while I imagine that this tour could get fairly
crowded during the peak summer tourist season, and the ride at the end
of September was wonderful for its lack of campers and RVs, it does get
pretty cold the last week of September. When we left camp at Judge
Magney State Park on the second day of our trip, the temperature was
right at 40 degrees F., and while it warmed up to 60 degrees in the
early afternoon, by late afternoon it cooled off quickly down to the
mid-40s again before it got dark. Out entire trip covered just under
1,600 miles in four days. The next time I will allow at least twice as
much time. In summary, if you are a motorcyclist and live in the
Midwest, do this trip. Period. During the off-season if possible. I
feel incredibly lucky to live close enough to take advantage of this
beautiful inland sea, and the rides and places that surround it.

July 2005
What a great trip! My wife and I started/finished
in Ashland, Wisconsin, during the first week of July 2005. We pull a
camper trailer behind our motorcycle and found excellent campgrounds
all the way around the lake. Kakabeka was fantastic. We felt the most
scenic part of the trip was from White River to Sault Ste. Marie.
Breathtaking! The Bushplane Heritage Museum in the Canada Sault was a
worthwhile stop, too. We wanted to take the Agawa Canyon train ride but
ran out of time. Oh well, that just gives us another reason to do it
again.

August 2004
My wife and I completed the tour in August 2004.
Our favorite places included the Apostle Islands, Duluth, Split Rock
Lighthouse, Grand Marais (where we had a fabulous hotel on the water),
Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Old Woman Bay (my favorite spot on the big lake)
just to name a few. We have traveled many roads along Lake Superior in
the past, but never all the way around her. A great trip! Only had one
day of bad weather the entire trip. Saw bear, moose, eagles and a
wolf.

Summer 2005
Beautiful! Serendipity in Rossport and the Pie
Place in Grand Marais, Minnesota, were wonderful! There were 4 vintage
cars in the party and we made front page news in Wawa!

August 2004
Seven of us left Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, in
August of 2004 on motorcycles. Not being particularly young, we
scheduled our trip to be between 200 to 300 miles per day. Day one
ended in Ironwood. Day two involved a crash and ended at St. Luke’s in
Duluth. Six of us pressed on to Thunder Bay on day 3. Day 4 finished up
in Wawa and day 5 completed the trip back to the Soo. The seven people
were:
Tom Rautio, Bob Benson, Bob Shimmens, Bob Smith, Pat James, Paul
Duesing and Peter Duesing, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
July 2, 2006
Entire trip, especially Canadian and Minnesota
North Shore, Temperance Bay, & Amethyst Mine. Highlights were the
people we met along the way.

June 25, 2006
We completed the 5-day tour on June 25, 2006.
The sights we enjoyed the most: Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Agawa
Indian paintings, Kakabeka Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Duluth Harbor
and Tahquamenon Falls. Seeing a postcard with Split Rock Lighthouse the
previous fall inspired us to complete this trip. We’ve been all over
the United States on our Gold Wing and this area is second to
none.
