We left from Ely, Minnesota, and spent the night in then
Ft. William/Port Arthur. Then on to Wawa, the Sault, Ontario,
Ishpeming, Michigan (for my husband’s high school reunion) and back to
Ely. We has recently returned from living for several years in Alaska.
One thing my husband had missed were the wild blueberries found around
Lake Superior. As we drove across Canada it was the peak of the season
and kids were selling blueberries by the side of the road. There were
service stations conveniently spaced along the highway and as we
remember, each one also had a restaurant, usually a mom-and-pop affair.
At one where we stopped, the table in the kitchen was piled high with a
gigantic mound of blueberries just waiting as the pie crusts were being
prepared. Because the highway was so new it was quite an adventure and
we enjoyed seeing the beginning of things. Wawa, even with the concrete
goose, we found charming. As for scenic stops, the Provincial Park on
the eastern side of the lake, which was rather rocky, but also had a
lovely sandy beach. We had stopped at a bakery in a small town and had
put together the makings for a picnic which we enjoyed as we spent
several hours in that beautiful spot. We were the only people there and
this was on a gorgeous day in the high part of summer. The quietness,
solitude and beauty of that spot remain in my memory. We have repeated
sections of that trip, but nothing stands out like that first time
40-some years ago.

My husband, Dan, & I drove the Circle Tour in our car
in August 1999 for our anniversary. We took about a week to drive
around Lake Superior and we have thought about driving the Circle Tour
again. Our favorite spots were the north shore of Minnesota, Bayfield
in Wisconsin, Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan and Kakabeka Falls in
Ontario.

My younger brother, Ted, and I biked around Lake Superior
leaving from Duluth, Minnesota, in June 2003. Using two Trek road bikes
and two Bob Yak trailers we completed the tour in 14 days. It was an
amazing trip and I would love to do it again someday. Our favorite
point was arguably Agawa Bay on the east coast of the lake. A campsite
within feet of the lake and a brilliant sunset made Agawa incredible.

Our trip started July 17th in Duluth, Minnesota
and we rode my boyfriend’s motorcycle. From Duluth we rode north and
stopped for the night in Thunder Bay, Terrace Bay and Wawa, Ontario,
and Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Ironwood, Michigan and spent our
last night back in Duluth. The ride was beautiful from beginning to
end. We only ran into rain just outside Thunder Bay and Copper Harbor,
Michigan. Otherwise the weather was sunny and warm. We especially
enjoyed Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Kakabeka
Falls Provincial Park, Aguasabon Falls, the Lake Superior Shipwreck
Museum at Whitefish Point, Michigan, the Pictured Rocks boat tour in
Munising, Michigan, and the Apostle Islands near Bayfield, Wisconsin.
We toured a few lighthouses and enjoyed the conversation with some of
the locals. People along the way couldn’t have been nicer or more
helpful and took the time to point out things to see. Unfortunately, we
didn’t see any moose but did see a bear alongside the road outside of
Marathon, Ontario, and an eagle in Munising, Michigan. There is too
much to see and do in one trip and we plan on taking the Circle Tour
again. This July we will complete the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. The
map we received with the Lake Superior Travel Guide] was extremely
helpful and guided us daily. Thank you!

We have circled the lake a number of times but
enjoyed this time the most. We did the trip counterclockwise with our
first few days spent in the Pictured Rocks area. Chaple rock and beach
were our favorite spots, other than getting engaged on 12 Mile Beach!
Lake Superior Provincial Park had some of the greatest sunsets we have
ever seen. And God bless the state of Michigan for putting a brewery in
a State Park! (Tahquamenon State Park’s Brewery)
