The tour was spectacular. We left August 8th from Thornbury,
Ontario. We went through Old Woman Bay and Pancake Bay before setting
up camp at Pukaskwa National Park. Due to heavy rain, the vote was to
leave the next day for Amethyst Harbour via Rossport. At Rossport we
had a very good but early supper at the Serendipity Cafe and got to
Amethyst Harbour around 9 p.m. We spent the next 4 days in the Amethyst
Harbour area. We did go to Thunder Bay and had lunch at the old CN
Station and walked into the marina. We also canoed, played tennis, had
good meals with family and sailed. On Friday we went to Silver Islet
and the lookout visitor centre at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. We
left for Grand Marais on Sunday the 15th. We were impressed with the
highway and lookouts and stayed the night at the Best Western - the
balcony was great. A splendid dinner at Birch Terrace was probably the
best of our trip. Next day we drove to Duluth with stops at Lutsen,
Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock and Betty’s Pies. The canal area is
something that Duluth residents should be very proud of. On the 17th we
set off for Bayfield. We took an island boat cruise and had dinner at
the Pickled Herring. The next day we took a ferry to Madeline Island.
We travelled the length of the island. It was very windy that day and
the ferry ride back was most eventful - the van was washed for free by
the Big Lake! The next day we departed for the Soo and Canada. We drove
690 km before we checked in at Thessalon. Our pickerel supper was very
good. The U.P. was very special. The beaches were long with hardly
anyone there. We wished that we had more time to spend in the area. We
would like to go and see the Keweenaw Peninsula on our next trip. The
trip was lovely. We plan to go and explore the south side of the lake
and possibly charter a sailboat in Bayfield.

John: How can you pick a favorite when the whole trip was
spectacular? Joanne: I liked all of the trip - wildlife up close and
personal, moose, bald eagle. Sunrise at Grand Marais, Minnesota.

Our favorite part was seeing the Sleeping Giant across from
Thunder Bay. We also enjoyed meeting Huckleberry Finn at your offices
in Duluth. Copper Harbor and the food were also favorites.

I took seven other people with me in accordance with the
Wolf’s Head Rally Circle Tour 2004. My best part of the trip was the
Canadian side. Although the U.S. side was cool, the Maritime Museum at
Whitefish Point was cool, I found everything past Sault Ste. Marie
breathtaking. Every hill, every corner was something new to the senses.
It was so wonderful that I am planning on coming back next year to see
it again. I think counterclockwise is best and though we did it in 5
days, 6 would be better.

My favorite place was the Keweenaw Peninsula, Copper Harbor
and Eagle Harbor in particular. I also enjoyed Whitefish Point,
watching the freighters in Duluth, Point Iroquois Light in Brimley,
Michigan, and numerous picnics along Lake Superior. Driving rain in
Canada was a disappointment, but even in the rain, White River and
Wawa, Ontario, were delightful. White River and their celebration of
“Winnie-the-Pooh - Where it all Began” is charming. My “Wally Burger”
lunch at Wally’s Steakhouse in Wawa was a bright spot on a rainy day. I
have wonderful memories of beautiful flowers and of the incredible,
majestic scenery all along Lake Superior. My trip was an exciting
adventure. So much to see and do and all of it interesting. I highly
recommend this trip!

We drove clockwise. We began in Duluth, but didn’t spend any
time there since this is where we are from. We spent our first night in
Thunder Bay taking our time driving up the beautiful north shore. The
next day we made it to White River, Ontario. Wawa was fun but Lake
Superior Provincial Park on the east shore was absolutely beautiful.
Agawa Rock was challenging. Our fourth day was spent in Sault Ste.
Marie, Michigan, and went on the Soo Locks Tour. We then drove to
Munising where we began our fifth day on the Pictured Rocks Cruises and
made our final stretch back to Duluth. Favorite spots: Lake Superior
Provincial Park, Agawa Rock, Pictured Rocks and, of course, the North
Shore Drive.

Our trip was great! We have so many favorite spots that we
could not just name one. The countryside around the lake is beautiful.
Kama Bay was gorgeous! Can’t wait ’til we retire and do it again in a
couple years.

My son, Joe, and I completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour
via motorcycle yesterday. We planned a ride in northern Wisconsin and
the U.P. after Joe received his motorcycle endorsement, but I talked
Joe into a weekend Circle Tour drive. We left at 4 p.m. on July 30 and
had supper at Emily’s Inn & Eatery in Knife River, Minnesota (good
food and friendly service). Stopped the first night at the Mariner
Motel in Silver Bay. Continued on and had breakfast at the casino in
Grand Portage. Entered Canada and rode hard all day. The Canada portion
had the best scenery. We really liked the Canada side and will go back
again with more time to enjoy the parks. Camped at the Agawa Bay
Provincial Park. Nice park, but we had a campsite on the roadside, so
trucks woke me up. We bought tickets for the Niijkwenhwag Friends of
Lake Superior Park fund-raiser - grand prize is a Landford canoe. Wish
me luck! Sunday we rode and crossed into the U.S. around 9 a.m. Hot
weather and sun in our eyes all day. Due to time constraints we stayed
on highways 28 and 2. I’d definitely take the time, next time, to ride
the south side and take advantage of the parks and beaches. It would
break up the long drive through the flat country. We had an excellent
brunch at the Golden Griddle in Seney, Michigan. We pushed hard to get
home Sunday and pulled into the driveway at 10:30 p.m. Cycles: 1997
Triumph Trophy 1200 & 1981 Suzuki GS850G.

Summer 2004
We have traveled the north coast of Michigan for the last
several summers with our grandchildren, visiting almost all of the
sights. This year we actually stated in April, when our 9-year-old
grandson, Caleb, was able to play with the bear cubs that were rescued
last spring and are being raised at Oswald’s Bear Ranch north of
Newberry, Michigan. This was Caleb’s favorite experience. Then this
summer, Beth and I completed the trip (without grandchildren) starting
in Mio, Michigan, traveling to the Porcupine Mountains (staying in
Ontonagon for two nights), then to Duluth by way of Washburn and
Bayfield. We spent two nights in Duluth, visiting the waterfront
(somehow missing your office). We encountered sever head winds
traveling east (I know because of fuel usage), and frost warnings in
Duluth and Thunder Bay. We worked our way up the north coast to Thunder
Bay, staying at Kakabeka Falls, where the wind had blown over several
trees and we had no electricity (or “hydro” as the Canadians say, eh?)
or water for most of the night. They were restored by late evening.
Because of a family commitment we then traveled to White River, Sault
Ste. Marie, Omer, Michigan and home to Wayne, Michigan, spending only
one night each. We loved hiking in the Porkies, spending time at
Tahquamenon and Kakabeka Falls. The shipwreck tour was especially
pleasurable. We spent one week in April and August 12th-24th completing
the tour. We used both your Lake Superior Travel Guide and Lake
Superior Magazine as well as a free one from Ontario. I am glad we had
your guide, as the “free” one was not nearly as complete nor useful.

We started out from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and the first
stop was Duluth on one of the hottest days there I can remember. My
friend’s son said that we had to cross the exact spot where we started
in order to complete the circle. So many wonderful things to see and do
along the way, wish we had more time to explore the many opportunities
that came our way. Very difficult to pick one spot or experience … I
sailed Lake Superior on the Coast Guard Cutters Woodrush and Mesquite from 1976-1979 and it was a real rush at times revisiting
places I had been long ago and seeing how they had changed, yet stayed
the same. The trip has sparked my interest in going back next summer -
if not the complete route, maybe more of the U.P. Thanks for providing
the Travel Guide and map. They were very helpful as were many wonderful
people we met along the way. After sharing our stories with friends and
coworkers, there might be a big demand for them next year!

Favorite Spot and Experience: Hard to choose. So many spots
were beautiful to see and visit. If we had to pick one it would be the
boat ride to see the Pictured Rocks in Munising, Michigan. The lake is
awesome from the boat - so vast! We enjoyed all aspects of the trip.
Also liked Wawa where we saw the giant goose statue. Took a lot of
pictures for our grandchildren. Also Winnie-the-Pooh in White River. By
the way, I subscribe to your magazine. It is great. Very informative
and useful when we did the tour.

Minnesota - awesome state! Beautiful along Lake Superior! Ouimet Canyon in Ontario is spectacular!
Donald Kuznicki, Rogers City, Michigan
We completed the tour around Lake Superior on July 15, 2004
Many times when I am at work, I think of the trip and
visualize in my mind the beauty of the trees, the mountain areas (big
hills) and the shore that we drove along. These visuals help bring calm
to my day. I am really anxious to do the other Great Lakes now and hope
that we can do Lake Ontario in the fall. Thanks for everything!

I was living in Duluth at the time (now I am away to
college). We, of course, started from Duluth and went clockwise. Being
a young kid, I thought it was cool that my brother and I were able to
swim in three different Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan and Huron. We
camped the whole way, so it was a lot of fun staying at different
places and being able to explore the woods and down to the water. Even
though I had been to Gooseberry Falls many times, it is still a
favorite of mine. The Mackinac area was a great place to shop as was
Sault Ste. Marie. I am now trying to gather a few friends together to
go around the lake again sometime in the next few years.

Two times - one time each in 2003 and 2004: July 13, 2003,
through July 17, 2003 - completed on July 17, 2003; and July 11, 2004,
through July 15, 2004 - completed July 15, 2004.
On both occasions we traveled as a group of approximately 100
motorcycle riders out of Two Harbors, Minnesota (Wolf’s Head Tour).
During our tour we particularly enjoyed Bayfield, Wisconsin, the drive
through the Porcupine Mountains and the drive on M-28 in Michigan.

It was our sort-of-annual summer family vacation. I had
suggested we take the tour and couldn’t believe that my folks actually
went for it!
