This was our honeymoon trip in a van. Favorite sites included: White River, Ontario; Horseshoe Falls, Michigan; and campsites in Minnesota, Ontario and Michigan.

First year it opened and again in 1999.
All the waterfalls and all the lighthouses along the way, especially Split Rock.
Sue & George Brown, Harrisville, Michigan
June 6, 2004, on motorcycle
Scenery - Duluth to Marathon was the best! It’s a great trip! The roads and weather were good.
Bill Lawson, Newaygo, Michigan
May 2004, as well as several other years!
Loved the pretty ride from Duluth to Grand Marais - it was very beautiful! We enjoyed this the most! Our favorite place was camping near Grand Marais for its proximity to the Lake in comparison to Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario portions of the tour.
Hildur & Don Normington, Park Ridge, New Jersey
May 25-June 11, 2004
Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Louis Villaire, Chicago, Illinois
June 9-17, 2004
Terrace Bay beach and waterfall, Pictured Rocks boat tours and Pukaskwa Park.
Archie & Eleanor Eskuri, Kettle River, Minnesota
From May 31 to June 12, 2004
Kakabeka Falls.
Paul & Nijola Gryn, Essex, Ontario
We went on the complete tour on June 18-22, 2003
My favorite spot (though the whole trip was beautiful) was the Red Rock-Nipigon area. The view was spectacular. Looking down on the bay from the mountains was better than San Francisco. The mist in the air felt refreshing. Cindy’s favorite spot was Copper Harbor. We spent a night there as in Nipigon. The lighthouse view was great as well as the view from up on Brockway Mountain looking down on the harbor. She really liked the road going in. The trees touching at the top made it seem like a tunnel going up to the harbor. We plan on taking a trip up there this fall with another couple on our bikes to see the trees then.
Byron & Cindy Landon, Cannon Falls, Minnesota
2 tours: October 1992 and June 2-June 6, 2004
PUKASKWA: hiked out on the rocks - still snow on the ground; impressed by the rock formations.
SLATE ISLANDS: seeing the caribou of the Slate Islands, 72 moose, 16 bear, much additional wildlife spotted throughout the journey.
Ken Randall, Midland, Michigan
June 2-6, 2004
Feeding the caribou by hand on the Slate Islands.
John Blackburn, Midland, Michigan
June 24, 2004
Running along the lake by Munising and Marquette - lovely sand beaches!
Ken Petschel, Mendota Heights, Minnesota
June 19, 2004
One of our favorite spots was the Split Rock Lighthouse. We also enjoyed the lakeside scenery on the eastern shore.
Bob Natole, Williamsburg, Virginia
Completed on motorcycle between June 21 and June 25, 2004.
Wawa has to be the coldest place on earth. Then there’s the fog! Beautiful country, good accommodations, good roads, questionable weather.

We just completed our tour. This was not to be a leisurely tour but a quick trip around the lake to scout out future destinations. We began our trip Thursday afternoon, June 24, and completed our 1,300 miles on Sunday afternoon, June 27.
The whole lakeshore is beautiful, but now we can truly say that Minnesota’s north shore is the best combination of natural beauty and cultural and recreational opportunities. Our best supper was at the Angry Trout in Grand Marais and our best lunch was at the Serendipity Garden Cafe in Rossport. We also enjoyed our stay at the Northern Lights Motel in Wawa - funky but clean, friendly, inexpensive and a great, comfortable bed.
We would like to spend more time in Grand Marais, Minnesota (we have spend many wonderful weekends in Two Harbors, Lutsen and the Bayfield/Apostle Islands areas), Thunder Bay and we would like to make it up to Copper Harbor. I know it’s a sin not to see the Keweenaw Peninsula on a Circle Tour, but we just didn’t have enough time on this trip.
Don & Susan Blakeslee, Fridley, Minnesota
We started our Circle Tour on June 9, 2004, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and finished on June 20, 2004, at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Things and sites we liked:
Wawa, Ontario - Seeing the large, white goose-Young’s General Store and waterfalls and short, small hikes.
Marathon, Ontario - The views of the lake and visiting with the people-so helpful.
Schreiber, Ontario - the tunnel and the visit with the gentleman at the Visitors Center plus the History he gave us of the area.
Thunder Bay - casino, the cathedral and Amethyst mine panorama.
Ironwood - the 5 falls and the beautiful trails and all the scenery.
Porcupine Mountains - Lake of the Clouds and the wonderful gals and guy at the information center.
Hancock/Houghton - the views from all areas, getting lost in the construction.
Baraga and L’Anse - the view and the casino, the visit with the people there. The white lighthouse (Point Iroquois). The history of the whole area.
Thomas & Bunny Reder, East Tawas, Michigan

We completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour in early July of this year. We left the Twin Cities on July 3 and drove up the north shore to Thunder Bay. The next day we drove to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, then we went to Mackinac Island for part of the day and spent the night at Paradise, Michigan. The next day we went to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore then stayed near the Porcupine Mountains. The next day we returned to the cities. Our favorite place to stay was the Best Western in Paradise. Favorite places were the north shore of Minnesota and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan. The negative things were the unusually cool weather and rain.
Bion & Vicki Beebe, Apple Valley, Minnesota

The Mercedes-Benz Club of the Twin Cities made a circle tour of Lake Superior beginning July 1 and returning July 5, 2004. The trip departed from the Village Inn in Cornucopia, Wisconsin, traveled to Bayfield and on to Copper Harbor, Michigan, for our first evening stop. Second day we traveled on to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and took a dinner cruise through the locks. On the third day we traveled to Rossport and a night at the Rossport Inn. Sunday was spent in Thunder Bay with breakfast at the Hoito on Monday morning.
Ron Harshman, Duluth, Minnesota
July 14, 2004
Mountains area of Ontario, Grand Marais and loved the Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour in Munising.
Doug & Joel Dye, Coon Rapids, Minnesota
Two times - one time each in 2003 and 2004: July 13, 2003, through July 17, 2003 - completed on July 17, 2003; and July 11, 2004, through July 15, 2004 - completed July 15, 2004.
On both occasions we traveled as a group of approximately 100 motorcycle riders out of Two Harbors, Minnesota (Wolf’s Head Tour). During our tour we particularly enjoyed Bayfield, Wisconsin, the drive through the Porcupine Mountains, the drive on M-28 from Hancock to Copper Harbor, the fudge at Young’s General Store at Wawa, Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, the food and decor at Serendipity Cafe in Rossport, the Angry Trout cafe in Grand Marais, Minnesota.

I completed my circle tour of Lake Superior last week. I was part of the Wolf’s Head motorcycle group out of Two Harbors, Minnesota. We left on Sunday, 11 July, and finished the tour on Thursday, 15 July. Nights were spent in Houghton and Munising, Michigan, and Wawa and Nipigon, Ontario. Since I live in Ohio, it took me two days to get to Two Harbors, two days to get back home. I rode about 3,800 miles total. My ’04 Harley Electra Glide Classic never missed a beat. Highway 17 through Canada was beautiful (despite truck traffic), but my favorite spot was Lac LaBelle Lodge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I would have liked to stay there longer. Maybe next year. I also liked Highways 26 and 41 on the Keweenaw and Highway 11 North of Nipigon and Ouimet Canyon and Brockway Mountain Drive.
Bob Whitlatch, Lima, Ohio
July 2004
On July 15, 2004, I hopped on a Greyhound Bus in Thunder Bay and began the first leg of my Circle Tour. I only traveled as far as Terrace Bay, where I met with my sister and brother-in-law, who live there. The next morning we packed up their motorcycles and headed for Sault Ste. Marie. I rode with my Brother-in-Law. Early evening in the Sault we met our brother Nick from Cornwall, Ontario. We crossed to Soo, Michigan, in the morning and cruised to Whitefish Bay and on to Da Yoopers Tourist Trap where we admired some eccentric displays. We made our way to Houghton and took a ride up to Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor (you guys spell that word wrong, by the way). We were disappointed that the Jampot was closed on Sundays, but respect the observation of the Sabbath. (I really wanted some fruitcake though.) Copper Harbor is directly across from Terrace Bay, Ontario, so we waved to our friends back home. Returned to Houghton and had a fantastic meal at The Library, which I had read about in your magazine. It was great because my sis had been a librarian for 12 years. I would have loved to spend another full day in that area because we didn’t have time to enjoy the beautiful deck at the Super 8 Houghton or to explore the city itself. We packed up the next morning and headed to Bayfield, Wisconsin. Nice little village; reminded me of Rossport. Would have loved to take a boat to the Apostles, but the others are bikers, not boaters. It was onward to Duluth. Just minutes after checking in at the Canal Park Inn the sky opened up and poured rain. Up to that point the weather had been great. Within the hour the weather cleared and we hit the streets. Had supper at Grandma’s and strolled around the walkways. The next day it was shopping in the unique stores downtown and a visit to the Great Lakes Aquarium. There was an east wind off the lake and the temperature dropped off. Having lived on the shores of Lake Superior all our lives, we were used to it and just pulled on a sweater. Stayed another night in Duluth. Will return in the future. Visited your headquarters (Lake Superior Magazine) in the Hawthorne Suites Building in the morning (bought a T-shirt for the boyfriend) and headed back to Canada.
We brought your magazine with us - a really good Travel Guide. We did not have one bad experience the entire trip, but will have to do the trip again to find the things we missed.
Maureen Tychoniak, Thunder Bay, Ontario
Nick Pluta, Cornwall, Ontario
