July & August 2003
Last July and August my brother and I rode our motorcycles around Lake
Superior; it was one of the most enjoyable rides we have completed
(except the day it rained and that still was an adventure). It is very
difficult to choose what part of this ride we enjoyed the most, the
long winding roads were great, the hilly countryside was beautiful, but
we both agree that the beaches were wonderful. The lake shore was very
clean, natural and inviting, we could have sat there all day talking
and enjoying the peace.
Scott & Jason Timmons, Vergennes, Illinois
On June 1, 2003, our family embarked on a 2 week experience that we still talk about today.
We drove from Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, then
on to Duluth. From there we went to Marquette, Michigan, then on around
Lake Superior. My daughter learned to ride a bicycle while staying at a
camp near Marquette, Michigan. She’ll never forget the tour because of
that. Since she could now ride a bike, we then spent one day at
Mackinac Island. The views and vistas of the lake from the Canadian
shores are beyond words. One of our most favorite parks was a
Provincial Park near Schreiber. Actually, we did not have any bad
campsites, since the whole tour was magnificent. After we entered back
into the U.S., we drove up to Ely, Minnesota, from Two Harbors. After
several days exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, we
sadly headed home to finish our 14-day tour. We arrived back in St.
Joseph on June 15, 2003.
Robert/Jackie/Bobby/Patrick/River Remis, St. Joseph, Missouri
We circled the lake twice. My husband and I and our cat did the tour in September 2001 and September 2002.
Our favorite spot (hard to pick just one) is Pancake Bay Provincial Park.
Linda & Fred Witter and Jazz, Presque Isle, Wisconsin
My late husband and I did the tour in 1997, in September, and had a great time!
Out of many great experiences, I remember most the boardwalk through
the forest in Terrace Bay. And the stretch of Highway 26 in Michigan
between Copper Harbor and Eagle River. Some of the best on the lake and
a complete variety. From sand dunes and beaches to pebbles and
boulders. We had our vacation in Copper Harbor for many years also.

The first time in July 2001; the second time in October 2003.
We have traveled both clockwise and counterclockwise and loved both,
discovering new places on each journey because we divided our time
differently on each journey. On our first trip (clockwise in July), we
spent more time in the Thunder Bay area, enjoying a whole day at Fort
William and visiting the various falls and canyons on the Sibley
Peninsula. On the second journey (counterclockwise in October), we
dallied in Sault Ste. Marie, taking the last lock tour and the last
Agawa Canyon tour for the season, and stopping at every cove and bay
along the coast on our way to Rossport, where we spent two delicious
rainy days at the Serendipity Guest House hiking the area, reading and
enjoying the comfort of that lovely residence. While reading the 2004
Travel Guide I was actually smitten with homesickness to do the tour
again even though I live in the #1 favorite section of the Circle Tour
- the North Shore!

Your Travel Guide map and guide were invaluable in all aspects. Our
favorite stop has to be the Lake Shore Resort and Salzburger Hof on
Batchawana Bay, Ontario. Wonderful people, great food and
accommodations. We since have revisited many parts of the lake - Copper
Harbor, Pictured Rocks, Point Iroquois Lighthouse, The Sault and our
favorite, Lake Shore Resort. In the not too distant future we want to
do the entire Circle Tour again. We will never grow tired of this
magnificent region.

A small group consisting of 4 first-timers took on the motorcycle tour.
The group left St. Cloud, Minnesota, with high expectations of a new
adventure. It was wonderful and breathtaking from Superior to Sault
Ste. Marie’s locks to Terrace Bay’s waterfall, Schreiber’s own “Rosie
and Josie’s“ Italian food and Rossport’s oldest lodge. Plans are under
way for a return trip this summer.

August 2003
This was our itinerary for our trip around Lake Superior in August of
2003, camping in our 1999 Starcraft Galaxy pop-up camper. There are
five of us, two adults and three children. Sometimes we take our
Greyhound Levi camping with us, but this trip was too long: August 4-6
Straits Park, St. Ignace. August 6-7 Au Train National Forest
Campground. August 7-10 Porcupine Mountains State Park. August 10-11
Grand Superior Lodge, Two Harbors, Minnesota. August 11-14 Sleeping
Giant Provincial Park, Pass Lake, Ontario. We had the most fun here
fishing and canoeing and we also had a bat take up residence in the
underside edge of the camper and didn’t like being chased out. August
14-15 Neys Provincial Park. August 15-17 Rabbitt Blanket Provincial
Park. August 17-18 Mackinac City (motel).

Apostle Islands - loved them! Coming back to Duluth area this summer because I didn’t get to go through it enough to enjoy it!

I completed my solo motorcycle tour around the big lake on a 1991 Harley Heritage Softail Classic on September 3, 4 and 5, 2003.
I had planned on doing it on my 65th birthday on September 11, 2001,
but the Canadian border was closed before I ever left home, so the trip
was delayed until last fall. My goal was more to make the circle rather
than sightseeing. I rode clockwise going up the North Shore, staying
the first night at Thunder Bay. The Minnesota shore is the most scenic
because of the proximity to the lake, plus the state has done an
excellent job of making everything accessible. On the second day I rode
the Canadian portion, ending 561 miles later at Munising, Michigan. The
high bridge at Sault Ste. Marie is a little scary on a motorcycle. The
third day was an easy ride back to Duluth, after a long lunch at
Bayfield and then on to home in Wayzata. The scenery is beautiful from
Thunder Bay to Marathon and from Wawa to the high bridge, but I also
enjoyed talking to the sailors at Rossport and inland with the owner of
a restaurant in New Brunswick. Everyone was very friendly. My total
mileage was 1,486 and I thank the tour center at the near end of Duluth
for all their maps and general information. It was a great experience.
Next time, I’ll see all the sights.
Karl Gempler, Wayzata, Minnesota
I completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour in 1990. All 1,300 miles! Mainly, with my mom, dad and brother.
I can just give a list of some of my favorite spots: 1) Duluth -
beautiful little city like Thunder Bay - my home! 2) Two Harbors - nice
small town just before Duluth, Minnesota. 3) Sault Ste. Marie -
bustling community in Ontario & Michigan. 4) Sudbury - the “nickel“
city - Big Nickel Mine - VERY BIG! 5) Isle Royale - a sailor’s paradise
- a real summer retreat! I could talk about this entire area all day.
The summer scenery and splendor are just superb!

The bridge at Sault Ste. Marie proved to be quite a spectacle. Along
the way we saw a bald eagle near the side of the road picking at the
carcass of a deer. This was the most favorite moment.

We really enjoyed the fall colors around the lake and Sault Ste. Marie,
the locks were very interesting, since my husband sailed on the boats
in the summers while he was going to school.

October 19, 2003; started on October 10th
Entirely too short a time to take it all in ! Some highlights: Most
awesome autumn colors: stretch from Presque Isle to Union Bay
(Michigan). Most incredible stars: Hurricane River campground with Big
Dipper over Lake Superior, right in our faces. Most hospitable Huge
Dog: Montreal Harbour and the Mad Moose Lodge, home of Bud the Malamute
- well, okay, home of Dale and Darlene, too. Most Helpful Park Worker:
Rabbit Blanket Campground near Wawa where the Park Ranger helped us get
our flat tire (and flat spare, be advised!) fixed. Most Beautiful Hike
in Stinging Snow Pellets: Pukaskwa National Park: breathtaking! Most
Charming Little Village: Rossport, one of our two non-camping nights in
an incredible guest house at Serendipity Gardens. Most loved familiar
place: North Shore (east of Lutsen) camped at Judge Magney park. Lake
Superior is a magnificent treasure. We’ve always suspected that, but
now we know for sure!

We circle-toured Lake Superior in August 1974.
We began our tour by driving to Grand Marais, Michigan, to visit a
friend who lived on the lakeshore, took a short detour to gawk at the
Mackinac Bridge, went “down memory lane“ in Soo, Michigan, where Al had
lived as a boy.
