My family and I had a lot of special times. One memory is that my son turned age 1 in Ontario. Most memorable place is Ouimet canyon. I am going to school right now and working on a persuasive presentation on why you should take the Circle Tour - so join me!

Three times, the last in 1993.
I have done the Circle Tour three times. The first time was the year it was completed and there were hardly any motels along the way. The last time was in 1993 and we stayed mostly in bed-and-breakfast inns. My favorite spot is Copper Harbor and the next is Bayfield.

My wife and I were married in August of 1962 and took our honeymoon, in part, driving around the lake. That first year, as I remember, theat the circle tour was available. Planners had anticipated 500 cars per day but were shocked to find many more than that. I have heard 5,000 but don’t know if that’s correct. We had made reservations at Terrace Bay. We arrived early and were debating if we should, in fact, stay there. We decided to stay not knowing what was beyond (eastbound). We were happy we did as even at 5:30 in the afternoon we were being turned away from the motel. Still the source of many happy memories.

We spent most of our time in Canada since we have both been to the shores of all the states. What an awesome trip! We started at Sault Ste. Marie driving through the Canadian side first. We hiked in Superior Provincial Park, Pukaskwa, Ouimet Canyon, Rainbow Falls and Sleeping Giant. The people in Canada were very friendly and we had great food along the way (Although we both regret not trying a Persian while in Pass Lake)! Our favorite part was the climb to the top of Sleeping Giant. What awesome views!! We also visited Duluth and hiked the Porcupine Mountains on our way back through the states. We Love Lake Superior! Thank You!

My wife and I made the circle tour in out PT Cruiser to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We enjoyed everything about the trip. A few of our favorite spots were Copper Harbor, Munising, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Grand Marais, Duluth and Madeline Island. We did stop by your office when in Duluth to see it, meet Huck, renew our subscription to LSM and ask about the existence of a decal/sticker. Your reply was that there was none at that time and that it sounded like a great idea. I modestly say we “might“ have initiated the idea of a Circle Tour decal!

Of the 28 days we allowed ourselves, it rained for two. It’s hard to pick a favorite spot, but the place we are still talking about it Pukaskwa National Park in Ontario. The first night we were there, we saw a full moon rising over Hattie Cove. We canoed, hiked and just marveled at the jagged mountains right next to the lake. The campground was so private and heated showers! What a great idea! We had a wonderful time. We certainly are not world travelers but we’ve been to California, Vancouver, Florida and the Lake Superior Circle Tour has been our vacation of a lifetime so far.

1968 and August 2002 1968: with three kids and a rented tent camper
Favorite spot then was Lake Superior Provincial Park and some private park near Thunder Bay that had a much needed shower! In 2002 just the two of us with our dog, Sitka, starting in Mishawaka, Indiana. We were disappointed with accommodations in Lutsen, Minnesota, checked out after one night and went on to Red Rock, Ontario, and stayed at the Red Rock Inn. They are very pet-friendly at the Red Rock Inn. It takes a lot of extra planning to travel with a dog. The scenery from Duluth to Sault Ste. Marie is beautiful and the roads were much better in 2002 than in 1968.

I enjoyed the whole trip - the Lake, the waterfalls, the cuts through the rocks, the lakeshore were only a few of the enjoyments along the way. I think the thing I remember most is our stay in Jackfish on our first trip. We found Jackfish by accident. The road in was not an improved road and the only access to Jackfish had been by train. The hotel was huge. It had the biggest bathtub I had ever seen. They told us the fishermen and lumberjacks had used the hotel, but not anymore. The owners were hoping to get it ready for tourists, but I think we were the first ones and we were treated royally. They fed us well and warned us to stay away from the moose and deer that came to visit. My sons had the time of their lives investigating the bowels of the hotel and trying out the rope fire escape from the window of the second floor. Jackfish itself had no roads, just paths from house to house. The train dumped mail and groceries on its way past. I also enjoyed the goose at Wawa, especially the second time when it was finished.

My father and I drove the Circle Tour together and despite our differing ideas about what time in the a.m. constituted and “early“ start, we had a great time! Being Minnesota born and raised, I am embarrassed to admit that before our trip, Duluth’s shoreline is all I knew of Lake Superior. That certainly changed with our trip around the lake. While planning our trip, I became enchanted with Wawa, Ontario. More than anything, I wanted to see the goose that reportedly flew over the Wawa Tourist Center. But, while zipping through Ontario, in awe of lake, woods and sky, would we miss it? I spent the day we were on the northeast side of Superior worried we would pass it by mistake. To my delight, there was no risk of that happening! The goose flies over the valley and would be impossible to miss, even if one had not been looking for it for 300 miles. It was a great trip, full of hiking to waterfalls (how many more steps?), wonderful food and perfect weather. It was my first time around the lake and promises not to be my last!
